An Uber driver allegedly shot and killed a passenger on southbound Interstate 25 in Denver early Friday morning, just days after the ride-hailing company rolled out a new safety feature on its app that allows users to quickly call for help.

The passenger’s death comes amid mounting concerns over the number of attacks by drivers on customers.

The shooting took place at around 2:45 a.m. after a confrontation between the unidentified Uber driver and passenger as they were travelling south on I-25 in a gray sedan, The Denver Post reported.

Specific details about the incident weren’t immediately available, but Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said the driver at some point was believed to have fired a gun at the passenger.

During the shooting, the car careened out of control and smashed into a concrete barrier. Both the driver and passenger were transported to hospitals but the victim was later pronounced dead, NBC News reported.

The wreck closed the highway’s southbound lanes through peak hour traffic and only re-opened at 8:20 a.m.

That prompted massive delays and traffic disruptions.

The driver was treated for unspecified injuries and released into police custody, although no arrest was reported to have been made.

"That isn’t to say that there won’t be an arrest in the future," said Jackson, according to The Denver Post.

Jackson further noted that it was unclear whether the shooting occurred while the driver was on the job and that authorities were in contact with Uber, NBC News said.

"The detectives have to look at all angles of the investigation and then present the case to the DA’s office and they will decide whether charges will be filed," said Marika Putnam, another Denver police spokeswoman.
