Tyler Hilinski, a sophomore quarterback at Washington State who started in the team's Holiday Bowl game against Michigan State in December, died of an apparent suicide at his apartment in Pullman, Washington, on Tuesday night, the Spokesman-Review reported.

The newspaper said that Hilinski, who was from Claremont, California, was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head with an alleged suicide note found near the body.

"Pullman Police detectives and the Whitman County Coroner's Office are conducting a thorough investigation to confirm the suspected cause and manner of death," Pullman police said in a statement according to the newspaper.

Hilinski completed 39-of-50 passes for 272 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in a loss to Michigan State and was projected with be the starting quarterback for the Cougars in the 2018 season, the newspaper said.

Washington State interim athletic director John Johnson and football coach Mike Leach both issued statements on Twitter.

Hilinski's younger brother Ryan, a highly touted high school quarterback prospect, issued a statement for the family, according to ESPN.

"We, as a family, are grieving after receiving news that my brother, Tyler Hilinski took his own life this afternoon," Ryan Hilinski's statement read, per ESPN. "We are in complete shock and disarray. Tyler was the kid that put a smile on everybody's face when they were down, especially his family. We will mourn the loss of Tyler for some time but celebrate the way he lived his life every day."

Washington State defensive back Skyler Thomas and quarterback John Bledsoe shared their condolences on social media with others.
