In a dangerous stunt, two women were filmed twerking along subway tracks in New York City for no apparent reason.

The YouTube video of two women dancing to no music was posted Monday. It shows the women dangerously close to the electrified third rail, the New York Post noted.

The Post said it was not clear at which subway station the women decided perform their risqué, bottom-shaking moves or when the video was made, but it was met with immediate disapproval by public transportation officials.

"One word, dumb," Kevin Ortiz, Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman, told the Post.

While twerking has long been popular in the hip-hop community, the dance reached mainstream hysteria in August when former Disney star Miley Cyrus performed it with a willing Robin Thicke at MTV's Video Music Awards, stunning unexpected parents and media types.

While these two woman appear to have pulled off their stunt unscathed, the New York City subway system has seen its share of deaths. In January, public transportation officials had planned to increase safety announcements after two riders were pushed into the path of oncoming subway trains last December.

Bloomberg News reported that 55 people died in New York subways in 2012, the most since 2007 and up from 47 in 2011. Some 141 people were truck by subway trains in 2012, which was actually down from 146 in 2011 and from a high of 188 in 2003.

Ridership on New York subways increased to an all-time high 1.66 billion despite the loss of ridership from Superstorm Sandy, according to Bloomberg.
