Tweets by Liberals Link Tornado Damage, GOP Foes of Sandy Aid

As several tornadoes ripped through the southeast on Wednesday, some of them deadly, liberals on Twitter were thinking not about the victims, but about recent votes in Washington.

Many thought the tornadoes were ironic, given the storms touched down in states where Republican congressmen voted against the Superstorm Sandy aid package earlier this month.

The tornadoes were part of a 1,000-mile wide storm system that battered areas of Tennessee and northwest Georgia Wednesday. The tornados caused significant damage in Adairsville, Ga., where one person was reported dead. Another person was killed by the storm in Tennessee, authorities told CNN.

The Adairsville death marks the first person killed by a U.S. tornado in 220 days, a record for most consecutive days without such a fatality, said CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen. The storm did major damage in Adairsville, CNN said.

Cars were overturned on Interstate 75, forcing officials to close the highway in both directions. Thousands were without electricity across the southeast.

Members of the House GOP, and Rep. Paul Ryan in particular, took a public relations beating when they voted against the pork-filled Sandy aid package earlier this month, and on Monday, 36 senators voted no on a $51 billion aid package, according to the Wall Street Journal. The bill passed 62-36 and President Barack Obama signed it into law Tuesday night, CBS New York reported.

Superstorm Sandy pounded the East Coast in October, causing tens of billions of dollars in damage, destroying thousands of homes and leaving millions without electric service. The storm killed at least 131 people in eight states.
