TV Channel for Dogs: DirecTV Launching Programming for Pooches

By    |   Monday, 15 July 2013 07:08 PM EDT

DirectTV next month is launching a DogTV network with programming geared for your pooch.

Shows include such things as dogs romping around outdoors, with music and sounds geared to catch your canine’s interest, USA Today reports.

“DogTV provides television for dogs as a 24/7 digital TV channel with dog-friendly programming developed to provide the right company for dogs when left alone,” states the DogTV website. “Through years of research with some of the world’s top pet experts, special content was created to meet specific attributes of a dog’s sense of vision and hearing and supports their natural behavior patterns. The result: a confident happy dog who’s less likely to develop stress, separation anxiety or other related problems.”

The service debuts for free on Aug. 1. On Aug. 14, the price goes up to $4.99 per month.

DogTV says no need to worry about your pet grabbing the remote and changing the channel once you’re gone.

“Dogs respond beautifully to what they see on TV,” the website says, “and enjoy it most when they see other dogs, other animals and even inanimate moving objects. YouTube has over 5,000 videos of dogs watching TV, and increasing numbers of dog parents admit that they saw their pooch watching TV more than once.”

More than 57 American households own a dog, and many of those mutts are getting pampered. The American Pet Products Association says total U.S. spending on pets is set to hit a record $56 billion this year (that includes spending on cats and other animals). More than $20 billion of that money, however, was spent on food.

The Pet Products Association also says that seven out of 10 dog owners have purchased at least one dog toy for their pet in the past year.
