Turducken Of The Sea: Shark Within a Shark Photo Goes Viral

By    |   Thursday, 15 August 2013 02:58 PM EDT

A photo of a sand tiger shark caught hook, line, and sinker with a smaller shark in its mouth is going viral, with some calling it the Turducken of the Sea.

Researchers from the University of Delaware’s Ocean Exploration Remote Sensing Biogeography Lab (ORB Lab), were capturing previously tagged sand tiger sharks when a scientist pulled out a line with a bait fish that was snagged by a 3-foot shark known as a dogfish, which was completely swallowed by the tiger shark.

“We caught one large female on our first line Friday, but we were not expecting to catch her like this!” the ORB Lab wrote on its Facebook page. “Thus unlucky smooth dogfish couldn’t resist the menhaden used as bait and unfortunately fell victim to one of the top predators in the bay.”

A photo of the catch was making the rounds on social networking sites.

“It’s a dogfish eat dogfish world,” quipped JP Trostle on the ORB Lab’s Facebook page.

“This picture is iconic. I bet it will become world famous,” Facebook user Mtsandzi Welive Lakhe wrote.

“If you think you had a bad day, then think of this dogfish,” tweeted @DavidCammegh.

“Is it still Shark Week?” tweeted @VickiFry.

The research expedition took place in Delaware Bay, where both tiger sharks and dogfish are common, according to the Daily Mail. The dogfish shark in the photo died, ORB Lab researchers said, but the sand tiger shark was healthy and released back into the bay.

Sand tiger sharks are not related to tiger sharks but are considered to be cousins of the Great White Shark. The species live around the world, including in the waters off the east coast of North and South America.

Sand tiger sharks are considered relatively placid animals. There are no reported human fatalities due to the species.
