Tristan Beaudette, a 35-year-old dad who was camping with his two young kids in California, was shot to death by an unknown assailant who is still at large.

The murder remains a mystery as investigators scramble to understand how the events unfolded Friday morning at the Malibu Creek State Park, CBS News reported.

Beaudette decided to give his wife some space to study for an upcoming exam by taking his two daughters, ages 2 and 4, camping for the weekend, but things took a tragic turn when an unidentified gunman shot the father of two in the upper torso just before 5 a.m.

By the time officials arrived at the scene, Beaudette had died. His body was found in a pool of blood in his tent.

His two daughters were not harmed, and investigators are still trying to piece together what happened.

"The theory we are working with is he was shot inside the tent," said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore, according to The Los Angeles Times.

He explained that the two children were believed to have been in the tent when the shooting occurred.

"We are working this as a homicide at this point," he said. "We are gathering evidence.... It will take some time."

CBS Los Angeles reported that this is not the first time the campsite has had an issue with gunfire.

Meliss Tatangelo was camping at the same place last year when she reported hearing a loud noise that sounded like gunfire at around 5 a.m. She later discovered a bullet in the back of her car.

Officials have not confirmed if the two incidents are linked.

Meanwhile, Beaudette's family is mourning the loss.

"Tristan was universally admired by his friends and family," a statement released by his family said, according to CBS Los Angeles.

"A scientist who loved cooking and micro-brews. Tristan was happiest out in nature, and spent every chance he could hiking, biking, snowboarding and camping with his family. Married to his high school sweetheart, Tristan was a supportive and generous husband, a full partner in every sense of the word."

A GoFundMe account has been set up to raise money for the family.

A similar incident took place in Texas in 2015, when a gunman went on the rampage and killed six people at a campsite in Anderson County.

The local authorities were first alerted to the tragedy when massacre survivor Cynthia Johnson managed to call 911 from a main road after reportedly hiding while the killings took place.
