A Trenton, New Jersey, Fire that broke out around 3 a.m. Monday consumed a row of nine houses and left three injured and at least seven displaced.

The six-alarm fire started in a home on Weinberg Place and was blown quickly to neighboring homes by strong winds, according to NJ.com. Power lines down in the street delayed firefighters from going to work on the fire, since they had to wait for power to the block to be shut down first.

Deputy Fire Chief Leonard Carmichael said that the fire had spread to five additional homes while the power was being cut off. Three of the homes collapsed and six more were burned to the frames, and three cars were burned in the fire as well. Two residents were injured in the fire and one firefighter was also taken to the hospital to be evaluated, NJ.com reported. The extent of their injuries was unknown.

It took about 30 trucks from Trenton and surrounding areas more than four hours to get the fire under control, with some hot spots still remaining. The fire’s cause is under investigation by the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, the police department and the fire marshal, NJ.com said.

Seven residents were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross, WPVI-TV reported. Central New Jersey Red Cross spokeswoman Diane Concannon said that the Red Cross may also assist others in the area if the power remains out for long enough.

Nearby neighbors had to deal with smoke from the fire, including a burning rubber smell reported by resident Judy Nettle.

“Hard to breathe because of the rubber smell. It’s just a lot of smoke,” Nettle said, according to WPVI-TV.
