A major tractor-trailer crash in Pennsylvania's Poconos Mountain region left two dead and 17 hurt after a head-on collision with a bus Wednesday morning.

Monroe County emergency officials in Pennsylvania told NBC10 Philadelphia that the crash occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on Interstate 380.

According to Lehigh Valley Live, the event was described as a “mass casualty” over emergency radio reports.

“I heard a big crash,” Johnny Walsh, who lives right behind the highway, told NBC10. “All of a sudden people were screaming.”

The accident between the Extra rig and the Viaggidea tour bus “split the trailer right in half,” Walsh continued.

“People started jumping out of their cars, going to the bus (to help),” Walsh said.

Officials told the station the wounded victims “were reported to be unconscious.”

A county 911 Center employee Jeff Strunk said that the victims were taken to several hospitals, NBC10 reported.

Some involved in the accident were airlifted for medical treatment by helicopter, WNEP reported.

Nine patients have been taken to the Pocono Medical Center, and four were airlifted, the Pocono Record reported.

Two helicopters have been dispatched, according to Lehigh Valley Live.

County dispatchers reported that the wreck left some people trapped on the bus, according to the NBC-affiliated station.

Lanes on I-380 have been closed, and operations at Mount Pocono Regional Airport were delayed so medevacs could come and go, airport manager Jack Asure told NBC10.
