Tracey Crouch, who is currently Britain's minister for sport and civil society, will add minister of loneliness to her duties as she works to measure degrees of loneliness and come up with ways to relieve those feelings.

Prime Minister Theresa May announced the new initiative Wednesday on a recommendation made in memory of Jo Cox, a lawmaker murdered by a neo-Nazi terrorist in 2016, who worked to combat loneliness when she was alive.

Recent U.K. research found one in 10 people regularly feel lonely and that 200,000 elderly citizens have gone more than a month without having a conversation with a friend or relative, the New York Daily News reported. In addition, 85 percent of young disabled adults also feel lonely, The Sun reported.

The Jo Cox Commission was set up in 2017 to make recommendations to combat loneliness.

“For far too many people, loneliness is the sad reality of modern life,” May said, The Sun reported. “Jo Cox recognized the scale of loneliness across the country and dedicated herself to doing all she could to help those affected. We should all do everything we can to see that, in Jo’s memory, we bring an end to the acceptance of loneliness for good.”

The government will publish a paper later this year detailing its strategy for dealing with social isolation and lonelinesss.

“I am sure that with the support of volunteers, campaigners, businesses and my fellow MPs from all sides of the House, we can make significant progress in defeating loneliness,” Crouch said, The Sun reported.
