Two students and one teacher were wounded in a shooting at Townville Elementary School near Greenville, South Carolina, early Wednesday afternoon. A teenage suspect was later taken into custody.

The shooting took place shortly after 1 p.m. at Townville Elementary School. Students were evacuated through the rear of the school and taken to Oakdale Baptist Church in Townville, where parents could pick them up, WYFF 4 reported.

The line of worried parents stretched more than half a mile as parents waited to be sure their children were safe, according to The Greenville News. Multiple law enforcement agencies and emergency response crews flocked to the school to offer their assistance.

Police officers cleared the school building while others watched from the roof.

The injured teacher was taken by ambulance to AnMed, and at least one student was airlifted to Greenville Health System’s pediatric center. Reports were mixed on which hospital the second student was taken to.

A man was found dead at a home about 3 miles away from the school. Investigators told WYFF there is a “direct connection” between this death and the school shooting, but no other details were given. Police were blocking the road to the home late Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting suspect is in custody, although no details are available about where or how the teen was found.

The shooting is the latest in a long string of school shootings that have devastated communities, sometimes claiming dozens of lives. A gunman killed 20 children and 6 staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, and in 2007, 32 students at Virginia Tech were killed by a gunman. Most recently, a 14-year-old girl in rural Texas wounded a fellow student at school and then killed herself earlier this month.
