Tough love helped turn a heroin addict's life around after Jennifer Jensen appeared before Judge Chris Wilton in 2014.

Many would have dismissed 24-year-old Jensen as a hopeless case, but the stern belief Wilton, who sits as a drug treatment court judge in Shakopee, Minnesota, helped her reach a new milestone on Friday: 33-months clean and a healthy 3-year-old son by her side, CBS News noted.

Jensen first appeared in court three years ago, "eight months pregnant and clearly using drugs," Wilton said, according to CBS News. "That's as bad as it gets. There's nobody worse than her."

She was sentenced to jail that day, ABC News noted, but a week later she re-appeared in Wilton’s court, where arrangements were made for her to deliver her son in a hospital.

Wilton also decided that it would be better to send Jensen for treatment, instead of back to jail, ensuring that she appeared in his courtroom 26 times before being discharged from probation.

Jensen said it was annoying at the time but, in hindsight Wilton saved her life. Her mother, Carrie Martin, echoed her sentiments.

"Every time I see him I'm like, 'You saved my daughter's life.' And he's like, 'No, I was just a judge.' And I'm like, 'No, she looks at you like a father,'" Martin said, according to CBS News.

In her final court appearance, Jensen asked Wilton to officiate the marriage between her and her soon-to-be husband, Bill, Inside Edition reported.

The judge agreed and in September the couple were married in a quaint outdoor ceremony in the Minnesota town of Shakopee.

"It was an odd feeling to preside over somebody who had been on probation to me but I was also so happy for her," Wilton said, per ABC News.

"Not just for meeting someone and getting married, but that she is sober and enjoying those things in life that so many of us take for granted."

Wilton added that there was still a drug epidemic in Scott County, with young people dying every week from overdose, but that Jensen was "a shining example of what you can do and where you can go," The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
