Top Party Schools: Syracuse No. 1 on Annual List, Univ. of Iowa No. 2

By    |   Monday, 04 August 2014 08:37 PM EDT

Syracuse University is No. 1 among top party schools, the first time the school has led the list released annually by The Princeton Review.

The Princeton Review released its national rankings in several categories of universities on Monday. Syracuse jumped four places to claim the top spot for party schools after coming in fifth place in last year’s rankings.

The annual review includes 62 Top-20 lists and surveys 130,000 students to find out which schools rank the best for professors, financial aid awards, athletic facilities, food, and other factors.

"Our purpose is not to crown one college 'best' overall or to rank these distinctive schools 1 to 379 on any single topic," Princeton Review Senior Vice President Robert Franek told The Associated Press. "We present our 62 ranking lists to give applicants the broader base of campus feedback to choose the college that's best for them."

Syracuse officials released a statement regarding the school’s top party ranking, saying the designation is "disappointing" and that the university in upstate New York doesn’t aspire to be a party school.

“We are disappointed with the Princeton Review ranking, which is based on a two-year-old survey of a very small portion of our student body,” the school said. “Syracuse University has a long-established reputation for academic excellence with programs that are recognized nationally and internationally as the best in their fields.

“We do not aspire to be a party school,” the statement continued. “With new leadership, we are very focused on enhancing the student experience, both academically and socially. Students, parents, faculty and the full Syracuse University community should expect to see important and positive changes in the year ahead that will improve and enhance the student environment in every aspect.”

Last year’s Princeton Review leader for Best Party School, the University of Iowa, dropped to second place in this year’s polling.

The University of California-Santa Barbara, West Virginia University, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign rounded out the Top 5 party schools.

Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, claimed the top spot for the most “stone cold sober” school for the 17th straight year, something the predominantly Mormon school was proud to announce on its Facebook page.

Colgate University, not far from Syracuse, was named the most beautiful campus while the University of Chicago has the best library and Virginia Tech has the best campus food.
