The Tokyo 2020 Olympic mascots have been unveiled following a vote taken by Japanese students who decided they liked two futuristic, superhero creatures the most.

Children from more than 16,000 elementary schools across Japan participated in the selection process, choosing their favorite design from three shortlisted illustrations, CNN reported.

The winning design, which fuses tradition and modern innovation, was revealed at a capital school on Wednesday after garnering 109,041 votes.

Ryo Taniguchi, an art major graduate from Cabrillo College in California, is behind the creation of the newly announced mascots that are yet to be named, according to NBC News.

The Olympic mascot features a futuristic blue and white checkered pattern and “has a strong sense of justice and is very athletic” while the Paralympic mascot is outfitted with a pink and white design and “has a dignified inner strength and a kind heart that loves nature,” according to The Guardian.

The two mascots are said to be “very good friends” who “respect each other.”

“We would like to convey the values of the sports and values of the Olympics and Paralympic Games to the next generation,” Masa Takaya, spokesperson for the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, told ABC News.

“These mascots will act as an ambassador for Tokyo 2020, so we are very much looking forward to having guests from overseas particularly from the US to meet our mascots in two years’ time.”

The Tokyo Olympics will officially kick off on July 24, 2020, and are set to run through until August 9, while the Paralympics runs from August 25 to September 6, according to CNN.

Leading up to the events, Ryohei Miyata, chairperson of the mascot selection panel, is excited to see the two mascots spring to life “in the stadiums, on the streets, and on TV.”
