'Today Show' Bombshell Firing Report False, but Chaos Continues at NBC

The "Today" show bombshell report saying hosts Willie Geist and Natalie Morales were fired turned out to be false, but subsequent stories of management chaos at the network suggest shakeups could still be on the way.

According to The Wrap, which has provided extensive coverage of NBC since Monday's firing of "Today" show general manager Jamie Horowitz after just 78 days on the job, "staffers have soured on President Deborah Turness," the woman who hired him. In addition to being blamed for the Horowitz hiring — which led to the false reports about the hosts — Turness' management style has now been called into question as NBC continues to slip in the ratings across multiple shows.

"The ratings for NBC News' three-prong empire have lost ground under Turness," The Wrap wrote on Thursday.

"'Today' has failed to take back its throne as the top morning show from 'Good Morning America'; 'Meet the Press' plunged to third place among the Sunday shows amidst months of ugly media fodder surrounding then-moderator David Gregory's imminent ousting, and 'Nightly News' with Brian Williams has fallen to number two in the advertising-coveted 25-54 demo behind ABC's 'World News Tonight' with David Muir."

The Daily Beast spoke with multiple insiders at NBC who wished to remain anonymous, confirming reports of chaos first exposed by The Wrap in the wake of Horowitz's firing.

"It's just complete disarray over at 'Today' right now," said one NBC veteran. "The entire staff is just at a loss to understand what's going on. Everybody wants to know what’s happening and who’s in charge."

Horowitz's short tenure as general manager of the show is now being seen as a huge embarrassment and hiring mistake of epic proportions — and it has yet to be seen if any heads will roll for that mistake.

"Basically, I feel sorry for everyone there," said a morning television vet from a rival network.

"This guy had completely unrealistic ideas and the sense that it would be so easy to blow up major stars and a major program. And obviously management has completely lost control. Pat Fili and Deborah Turness — somebody needs to be looking at them."

Meanwhile, the hosts themselves have been awkwardly bantering on air, downplaying the reports, and trying to assure audiences at home that everything is peachy at NBC.
