A letter thought to be written by the last French survivor of the sinking of the Titanic recently surfaced, providing details into the April 1912 tragedy.

A person wrote a message on Reddit around March 19, saying he had purchased the letter at an auction and would like help in translating the pages believed to have been written by Rose Amelie Icard. The letter has yet to be verified.

Icard is reported to have been a French maid and was with the widow of George Nelson Stone, a former Cincinnati Bell Telephone Company president, when the two began the journey back to New York aboard the Titanic. Icard died in 1964 but apparently wrote the letter in 1955, 43 years after the tragedy in which more than 700 people survived but more than 1,000 perished after the passenger ship hit an iceberg in the north Atlantic Ocean.

The Huffington Post confirmed the translation of the 10-page letter which included excerpts about the some of the women aboard the sinking ocean liner who were “still in evening gowns, some just out of bed, barely clothed, disheveled, distraught, scrambled for the boats” and how the wife of a wealthy Macy’s executive clung to her husband while refusing to get in a lifeboat.

The letter written by Icard is believed to have been addressed to the daughter of another survivor who had recently died.

At the time of its demise during its maiden voyage from Southampton, the RMS Titanic was the largest ship in the world and was commanded by Capt. Edward John Smith who had more than 40 years of maritime experience. He had previously been the captain for the Titanic’s sister ship, the RMS Olympic.
