The New York Mets have promoted Tim Tebow from their Columbia Fireflies farm club to St. Lucie, their third-highest ranked minor league affiliate.

The Mets made the news official on Sunday when the former NFL quarterback played his final game for Class A Columbia before reporting to Advanced St. Lucie on Tuesday.

The announcement caused mixed reactions in the sporting world which has always had a chip on its shoulder for Tebow.  His improbable career has been under scrutiny as of late for his stats.

The former NFL quarterback has 23 RBI and three home runs in 212 at-bats, noted the New York Daily News. He has 14 doubles and a triple, and has struck out 69 times and walked 23 times.

New York Mets GM Sandy Alderson said that although this was not a usual circumstance, the team felt it was the right time for him to move to high-A ball.

“I think we’re pleased with the first half of the season,” he was quoted on the Major League Baseball official website. “It’s not like he’s tearing up the league, but at the same time all the indications are positive. But at the same time, all the indications are positive."

This was met with a fair share of criticism from Mets supporters, who felt it was more a cleverly crafted marketing stunt than a logical sporting move.

Commenting on the Major League Baseball’s website, one user, PoloGrounder, stated:

“Just as in Spring Training, Tebow's "promotion" has a lot more to do with Alderson's attempts to draw media attention away from the troubles of the New York club than with anything Tebow has done to earn it. Tebow is not a professional-caliber baseball player which everyone (including Tebow) seems to know…”

On Twitter, fans were just as irate.

Baseball Wise tweeted:

“Mets promote Tebow to single A but still won't promote Rosario. In case you were wondering about their priorities...:

In a press conference on the eve of his final game with the fireflies, Tebow was quick to shrug off public speculation regarding his performance.

Fielding questions regarding his progress in the Class A Columbia and how this would translate to his progress in the Class A Advanced St. Lucie, he said it was important to continue to work on things and to try and show this at every game.

“Regardless of whether the results are there or not, sometimes that’s the game of baseball,” he said.

“As athlete you have to compartmentalise every little thing so that you know where you are at and what you need to do and not just worry about the results or whatever else people are going to be talking about.”
