Tim Tebow broke his major league hitting slump on Monday, knocking a single through the left side of the infield in his second at-bat after going 0-for-7 in his previous two spring training games.
The former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner got his first hit off of Miami Marlins pitcher Kyle Lobstein in an exhibition game in which he was not expected to play.
Three days earlier, New York Mets manager Terry Collins had said that they had no immediate plans to start Tebow again, but the team was shorthanded because some of its players are participating in the World Baseball Classic, so Tebow was penciled into the lineup, according to ESPN.
He is expected to play a few more times this week for the same reason.
Tebow also made a diving catch of Marlins' first baseman Justin Bour's second-inning, left-field fly ball, the New York Daily News reported.
His base hit was erased with a double-play grounder, but fans in Port St. Lucie, Florida, were ecstatic to see him play.
In a previous game, he got a standing ovation for grounding into a double play that scored a run and catching a routine fly ball, the Daily News reported.
While a good portion of the Twitterverse is skeptical of the media coverage he receives, fans continued to be excited about everything Tebow does, no matter what it is.
