Tim McGraw's 'Portland Maine' Single on New Album a Hit There

Country music superstar Tim McGraw has been offered a tour of Portland by the mayor, if the singer can find the Maine city, after a song on his latest album "Sundown Heaven Town" created surprised curiosity.

The album was released Tuesday and on it McGraw included a new breakup song titled "Portland Maine," describing how a love left him and went there, according to The Associated Press.

The song's refrain repeats McGraw saying "Portland, Maine, I don't know where that is; I don't want to know, I don't want to know," according to AZLyrics.com.

"We certainly think that whoever it is that broke Tim's heart made a fantastic choice in coming to Portland," Portland spokeswoman Jessica Grondin joked to the Press-Herald on Thursday. "And while we're pretty sure that Tim does indeed know where Portland is, the mayor (Michael Brennan) would be more than happy to take him on a personal tour the next time he's in the area."

And while admitting that the song is not exactly touting the charms of life in Maine, Lynn Tillotson, president of the Greater Portland Convention and Visitors Bureau, told the Press-Herald that it's not every day that a heavyweight entertainer like Tim McGraw puts a town's name in a song.

"I was so excited when I heard about this, but then I was a little disappointed when he kept singing he didn't know where it is," Tillotson told the newspaper. "Still, it's amazing publicity. We might start a Facebook campaign saying something like 'Tim McGraw doesn't know where Portland, Maine, is, do you?'"

Tillotson said she hopes to contact McGraw's team and invite the country star and his family, including wife and fellow country superstar Faith Hill, to visit the city as well.

Chuck Dauphin of Billboard magazine said he really likes the Portland single, and thinks it could be a big, award-winning hit for McGraw.

"There's a bit of a weathered side to McGraw that we don't know if he could have pulled off quite as effectively on his first couple of records," Dauphin said his review of the song. "It's a powerful lyric about a man who is caught between what is easier and what is the right thing to do. Could be in the running for the CMA single of the year in 2015."
