The Rev. Tim LaHaye, a Christian fundamentalist leader and co-author of the "Left Behind" book series, died Monday at age 90 following a stroke.

LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins authored the 16-volume series about those left behind to suffer seven years of tribulation after the Christian rapture, The Associated Press reported. The series has sold more than 80 million copies worldwide. A prolific nonfiction writer, LaHaye also wrote 60 other books.

LaHaye's death was announced on his Facebook page.

"Thrilled as I am that he is where he has always wanted to be, his departure leaves a void in my soul I don’t expect to fill until I see him again," Jenkins said in the Facebook post.

LaHaye was active in conservative political groups. He formed the Council for National Policy and, along with his wife, creating Concerned Women for America. He also encouraged the Rev. Jerry Falwell to create the Moral Majority.

“Tim was one of the most godly men I have ever known,” David Jeremiah, LaHaye’s successor at Shadow Mountain Community Church, told Christianity Today. “Almost every conversation I had with him ended with his praying with me and for me. He wrote me extended letters of appreciation for what God was doing in our church. We shared long lunches together talking about ministry and praying for our nation."

LaHaye was born in Detroit in 1926, the son of an autoworker. An Air Force veteran and member of the Southern Baptist Convention, LaHaye graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, and earned a doctorate at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon.

The "Left Behind" series spawned a franchise, including movie spinoffs, DVDs, audio dramatizations, video games, and clothing, The New York Times reported.

The series is credited by some with elevating the fundamentalist movement and criticized by others who claim it includes anti-Catholic, anti-Semitic and other religious biases, The Times said.

LaHaye is survived by his wife, Beverly, four children and nine grandchildren.

Twitter users issued many remembrances of the religious leader.
