Tim Hudson Injury: Braves Pitcher Suffers Gruesome Broken Ankle

Atlanta Braves' pitcher Tim Hudson's injury Wednesday night while playing against the New York Mets at Citi Field turned out to be a broken ankle.

The 38-year-old right-handed pitcher was covering first base when Mets left fielder Eric Young Jr. stepped on Hudson’s right ankle as he ran out the play.

"I knew I didn't get any of the base. I got all of his foot," a somber Young told The Associated Press. "I pretty much knew it was broke right when I did it. That's why I ran back to him and tried to console him as much as I could and to apologize."

In the video of the play Hudson's ankle is seen bending sideways from the impact of the other player's cleat, causing him to drop to the ground immediately, where he remained in pain as EMS attended to him before removing him on a stretcher.

"It's terrible," second baseman Dan Uggla told the AP, reacting to the incident.

"I flipped and spun," said Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, according to AP. "I didn't see it and I don't want to see it."

After undergoing X-rays at Citi Field, Hudson was found to have a fractured right ankle.
Once the swelling subsides, he will undergo surgery in Atlanta.

The Braves have yet to provide a timetable as to how long Hudson will be out for the injury.

Up until the first base encounter, Hudson had pitched a shutout into the eighth inning.
The Braves went on to beat the Mets 8-2.

Before having his leg bent in a direction it is not supposed to go, Hudson can be seen placing his foot across the base, which likely led to the incidental impact.

Players are trained to place their foot on the side of the base so as not to obstruct the other player's running path and potentially cause injury.

The somewhat graphic scene is reminiscent of the injury suffered by college basketball's Kevin Ware, a guard for the Louisville Cardinals, who during the 2013 NCAA Tournament sustained a horrific fracture while playing Duke University.

Trainers quickly covered his leg with towels due to the graphic nature of the injury, and Louisville players openly wept as Ware screamed in agony.

Much like the Braves, Ware's Cardinals also went on to beat Duke in the game.
