Tim Allen is recalling how "horrible" it was to film the final season of "Last Man Standing." The series initially aired in 2011 on ABC before being canceled. Fox revived it for a 7th, 8th and 9th season. In an interview with Fox News, Allen, who plays Mike Baxter in "Last Man Standing," said he was proud of the show's run but also upset having to say goodbye to another character.

Knowing that the final day of production was looming ahead made going to set every day "horrible," he said.

"I thought it would be a good idea. It was a terrible idea!" Allen explained.

"I feel like because we show up to work going ahhhhh [crying] I can't," added co-star Nancy Travis, who plays Allen's onscreen wife.

The final season premieres on Sunday, Jan. 3. In an upcoming episode, Allen reprises his role as Tim Taylor from "Home Improvement," which ran on ABC from 1991 to 1999. The 67-year-old actor said he found taking on the role strange.

"It was really confusing for me to play Tim Taylor, who, I think of Mike Baxter is an evolution of that character," Allen noted. "We don't know whether Tim Taylor was really stupid or really smart. I mean, I played the guy I wasn't sure."

Speaking about the show's conclusion in an interview with Entertainment Tonight this week, show executive producer and showrunner Kevin Abbott said he wanted to honor the work of previous characters and send them out in a way that makes sense to viewers and also lets them feel as if they are going on with their lives.

"I'm glad that we had the chance to spend the time with these characters because they're fascinating, interesting people," he said. "In the final episode, I want people to laugh, maybe cry a little bit. But at the end of the day, for them to go, 'Wow, that was great. That's the right way to end the show.'"
