Tiger Woods roared back to the professional golf scene Thursday, making five birdies and closing with a three-under 69 in the first round of the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas on Thursday.

While the score was only good enough for an eighth-place tie against many of the best golfers in the world, Woods mainly played against his own expectations after 301 days away from golf due to his fourth back surgery, PGA Tour.com noted.

"For me, I thought I did great," said Woods, who ended the round three shots off the leader Tommy Fleetwood, per PGA Tour. "To come out here and score like I did, it was nice."

The return to the golf course was a comforting change for Woods, who not only was bouncing back from his back surgery, but an embarrassing DUI arrest near his Florida home connected with prescribed pain medication.

The incident, which played out with his arrest mug shot making headlines throughout the country, ended with the former No. 1 golfer in the world entering a first-time offenders program and pleading guilty to reckless driving in October on a plea deal.

Woods took the first steps in putting those troubles behind him in mid-October when he was allowed to start hitting golf balls again, which was roughly six weeks ago, ESPN reported.

He hit seven of 13 fairways and 12 of 18 greens over the round at the Albany Golf Club course where 15 of the 18 players broke par, ESPN noted.

"I was very happy I found the rhythm of the round by the second hole,'' Woods said, per ESPN. "After I hit that 8-iron in there pin high (on the par-3 second), I felt I've got the rhythm. On 3, I smashed a drive down there and then hit a 2-iron about 265 into the wind, I just hit it on a rope, put it up there on the green. I knew I was back playing again."

Golf.com warned not to read too much into Woods' latest comeback too early. After finishing 15th at the Hero World Challenge last year, he missed the cut at Torrey Pines before withdrawing Dubai Desert Classic after the first round before back surgery.

Woods is scheduled to tee off with Henrik Stenson on Friday, according to Golf.com.
