Two white tiger cubs mauled their keeper to death and may have eaten some of him at a zoo in India on Saturday while guarding his body from would-be rescuers.

The Times of India reported that keeper Anji, 41, who went by only one name, entered the enclosure of the 18-month-old cubs at Bannerghatta Biological Park near Bangalore to put the tigers’ food inside but apparently didn’t know it was an area the resting cubs could roam, and the cubs chased him down.

Australian Broadcasting said it took about 90 minutes to retrieve the body from the cubs.

Anji had been recruited for the job about a week ago, The Times said, noting that another keeper at the park was killed when he was attacked by lions two years ago.

Bannerghatta Biological Park is one of India's major zoos and exhibits varieties of birds, reptiles and mammals, a safari with enclosures of tigers, lions, bears, along with the breeding of endangered species, the park’s website said.

The zoo is home to 26 normal tigers and seven rare white tigers.

"The victim was assisting the caretaker in pushing the cats into their enclosure for the night when they turned around and pounced on him as one of the four gates was not shut and latched by then," Santosh Kumar, the park's executive director, told Agence France-Presse.

"The felines did not allow the caretaker to retrieve Anji's body from the spot and were guarding it, which delayed in rushing him to a nearby hospital."

Relatives protested outside the park on Sunday, demanding 500,000 rupees ($7,647) in compensation for the death and charging the zoo with negligence, AFP reported.

London's Daily Mail said white tigers, which are located in southern and eastern Asia, are considered endangered species and that roughly half of the world's tiger population is settled in India with some 2,226 of the tigers roaming protected in reserves, according to a 2014 count.
