Tech company Three Square Market is offering to implant microchips for free into the hands of any of its employees who want to easily be able to scan into their building, sign into their computers, or buy snacks.
The Wisconsin-based company is not requiring the microchips for its workers, but says about 50 employees have already expressed interest in them.
"It's the next thing that's inevitably going to happen, and we want to be a part of it," Three Square Market Chief Executive Officer Todd Westby told KSTP-TV.
About the size of a grain of rice, the microchips can be implanted "within seconds," the company said in a statement.
The microchips cost $300 each, a cost Three Square Market is picking up, KSTP reported.
"We see chip technology as the next evolution in payment systems, much like micro markets have steadily replaced vending machines," Westby said in the statment. "As a leader in micro market technology, it is important that 32M continues leading the way with advancements such as chip implants."
The microchips' information is encrypted and secure, Westby said, and does not have any location tracking.
Twitter users aren't so sure microchips in humans are a good idea.
