Thomas Gilbert Sr., a multimillion-dollar hedge fund founder, was shot and killed over the weekend at his New York City apartment and now his 30-year-old son has been taken into custody for questioning.

Gilbert Sr., the 70-year-old founder of Wainscott Capital Management, was shot in the head and discovered in the bedroom of his Manhattan apartment around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Bloomberg reported. Police took his son, Thomas Gilbert Jr., into custody shortly after 1 a.m. Monday but have not yet charged with him with a crime.

Authorities told The Wall Street Journal that the father and son had been discussing their relationship prior to the shooting. Gilbert Sr.'s wife then called 911 after finding her husband in the bedroom with a handgun nearby, the newspaper noted.

The weapon was described by police as a Glock 22 .40-caliber handgun, according to the New York Daily News.

The doorman on duty at Gilbert Sr.'s apartment reportedly told police that a young man who may have been Gilbert's son had quietly slipped past the front desk moments before the shooting. Another source said he overheard the doorman telling police detectives that he saw a young man wearing a hoodie walk into the lobby, according to the Daily News.

Gilbert's death is New York City's fourth homicide in the first few days of the New Year and the first in the Sutton Place neighborhood since Jan. 2, 2006, when a mentally ill man reportedly stabbed his 86-year-old mother to death in her apartment.

The area is an exclusive neighborhood that has boasted celebrity residents like Michael Jackson, Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, and Arthur Miller, according to the Daily News.

According to the Wainscott Capital Partners website, Gilbert Sr. was a Princeton and Harvard Business School graduate and had worked 40 years on Wall Street investing in the stock market, as well as private equity, real estate, and the fixed-income market. He was also a cofounder of Syzygy Therapeutics, a private equity biotech asset acquisition fund that identified and invested in late-stage biotech drug startups with billion-dollar market potential.
