'The Hateful Eight' Nearly Ended Up in Tarantino's Wastebasket

"The Hateful Eight" was nearly abandoned when the script was leaked in January 2014, but award-winning producer Quentin Tarantino has pushed ahead and it will be released in the fall.

Tarantino was "irate" when he charged that one of a small group of actors he showed the screenplay to leaked it to the public, according to Deadline.com, and he threatened to mothball the project.

"I'm very, very depressed," Tarantino said then. "I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn't mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now. I gave it to six people, and apparently it's gotten out today."

Tarantino told Entertainment Weekly the nearly abandoned western has an "Iceman Cometh" feel to it and Entertainment Weekly's cover features three of the film's stars, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Kurt Russell in character.

"'The Hateful Eight' is set several years after the Civil War," wrote E! News' Corinne Heller. "Russell plays John 'The Hangman' Ruth, who escorts Leigh's character, a fugitive named Daisy Domergue, through snowy Wyoming to Red Rock to bring her to justice. … Along the way, in true Tarantino style, they meet a slew of different and possibly bizarre characters."

"For me it has more of a Western 'Iceman Cometh' kind of vibe about it," said Tarantino. "A bunch of guys in a room who can't trust each other. That wasn't a marching order when I sat down to write the script, but pretty quickly I realized this is kind of a nice coming-full-circle."

Entertainment Weekly wrote that the film will remind fans of Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs," the 1992 movie that made him a behind-the-scene powerhouse in Hollywood, noted RottenTomatoes.com. In fact, two stars from "Reservoir Dogs," Tim Roth and Michael Madsen, appear in "The Hateful Eight."

While the film features plenty of Tarantino movie veterans, such as Roth, Madsen and Jackson, Leigh told Entertainment Weekly that she actually was looking for something she could work with the filmmaker on.

"I knew Quentin, but I had never had a chance to work with him, and I really wanted to," said Leigh. The film also stars Channing Tatum, Demian Bichir, Walton Goggins and Bruce Dern.
