"The Blob," the 1958 classic science fiction horror movie which already has a sequel and a remake to its credit, will soon get another reboot complete with state-of-the-art computer generated graphics.

Simon West — whose directing credits include 1997's "Con Air," 2001's "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," 2011's "The Mechanic," and 2012's "The Expendables 2" — is on board to for the "The Blob" remake, according to Deadline.com.

West said he is looking forward to the challenge of bringing "The Blob" back to life with all the modern special effects toys of today. The 1958 version, which starred Steve McQueen, featured an oozing alien form that gobbled up a small Pennsylvania town after a meteor crash.

"With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of 'The Blob,'" West told Deadline.com. "The world I create will be totally believable, immersive, and emotionally satisfying. It's a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans."

Goldcrest Films will coproduce "The Blob" remake while Goldcrest Post will provide picture and post-production. Chris Haney, who did work with "Carol" and "Marvel's The Avengers," will supervise the VFX work.

"We grew up on 'The Blob,'" producers Richard Saperstein and Brinan Witten said in a statement on the Goldcrest website. "Simon West has a terrific and terrifying vision for bringing this iconic outer-space creature to life for a new generation."

"We're grateful to Jack Harris for the opportunity to reintroduce a classic franchise, and to Goldcrest and Taewon (Entertainment) for joining us on this journey."

Pascal Degove, managing director of Goldcrest Films, also praised West's arrival to the project, according to the company's statement.

"Simon West has a unique gift for blending cutting edge effects, awesome visual spectacle and a hint of humor," Degove said. "He's the perfect choice to reimagine 'The Blob' and we're so excited to be partnering with him."

The latest 1988 version of "The Blob" was rated R and made $8.2 million at the box office as a late summer release, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
