A Texas teen was found in Mexico safe after she reportedly traveled there to meet an older man she had been communicating with covertly for a year, CBS News reported.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Homeland Security teamed with Mexican authorities to finding Ashlee Hattermann, 13, on Sunday after she went missing Friday, according to CBS News.

Keith and Tiffany Hattermann told CBS News that they found out that their daughter had been exchanging graphic sexual images and messages last May through her phone by using covert messaging apps and took it away.

Tiffany Hattermann said, according to CBS News, that her daughter said last spring that the man she was communicating with was 29 years old and lived in Mexico. She said they took that information to authorities.

Deputies told KHOU-TV that the 13-year-old was found in Mexico City after leaving on a Greyhound bus to the border near Laredo.

Surveillance video at the Greyhound bus stop in the Houston suburb of Katy showed the teenager with an unidentified woman, the television stated. The woman told KHOU-TV said that the teen lied to her to get her to purchase a bus ticket for her.

"I asked her how old she was; she said 18," the woman told KHOU-TV. "She told me she was here all week, visiting her boyfriend. She told me that [her parents] lived in Laredo and that she had been up here to visit her boyfriend and she was trying to get back to her family."

The woman told the television station that she purchased a lunch for Hattermann as well.

"I'm just devastated, I'm so upset," the woman told KHOU-TV. "I'm devastated for this little girl. I'm devastated for her family."

Hattermann's parents complained to the Houston Chronicle that the Harris County Sheriff's Department did not follow through on the initial investigation in May.

"There's been an ongoing case since May of last school year when she was talking online with a sexual predator," Hattermann told the Houston Chronicle. "It was investigated by the Harris County Sheriff's Office and unfortunately they never followed up with it."

Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesman Thomas Gilliland, charged that the department did look into the claims, the Houston Chronicle wrote.

"It has been investigated," Gilliland told the newspaper. "It wasn't just put on a shelf."
