Texas May Let College Students Pack Heat on Campuses

Wednesday, 23 February 2011 01:34 PM EST

Texas lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow students to carry concealed weapons on campus — and that concerns officials at some local colleges, the Amarillo Globe-News reported Wednesday. Supporters argue it would it prevent shooting massacres like the Virginia Tech shootings in 2007 that killed 33 people, including the gunman.

Texas, guns, college, campusesIn West Texas, supporters of the measure said it would not have much of an impact because local college campuses have been free of gun-related incidents in recent years. Opponents, however, said it could affect teaching and wouldn’t stop a crazed gunman.

It the proposed law passes, Texas would become the second state behind Utah to allow students to carry concealed weapons on college campuses.

Justin Warlick, a senior majoring in economics at West Texas A&M University and a supporter of the proposal, told the newspaper that licensed gun holders follow the laws.
"It's probably not a bad idea,” Warlick said, “Overall, I don't think there will be any problems with it. I've come to the conclusion that people who have a permit don't do anything bad."
