A photograph of a Texas billboard urging liberals to keep driving until they leave the state has gone viral, but who paid for the advertisement remains a mystery, USA Today reported Wednesday.

Regardless of who created the billboard, it was Kyle Mccallie's Facebook post of it that made the message spread across the country, with it being shared 13,000 times on his site with more than 1,600 comments.

"Liberals please continue on I-40 until you have left our GREAT STATE OF TEXAS," the sign just east of the Texas Panhandle town of Vega, about 35 miles from the New Mexico border, said, according to a photo taken by Mccallie.

Mccallie, 25, who lives in Fritch, Texas, suggested his support for the sign in his Facebook caption.

"Billboard 6 miles east of Vega on I-40 east bound! I like it," he wrote Tuesday. He told USA Today, though, that he had no idea who was behind the billboard.

Amarillo television station KVII-TV, the Dallas Morning News, and Fox News, among others, all posted stories about the billboard but had no greater insight about who create and paid for the message that is now spreading on social media.

According to the photo, the advertisement appears to be on a billboard owned by Burkett Media, based in Austin, Texas. According to its website, the company offers a diverse mix of over 100 high profile static and LED digital billboard locations throughout the state.

The billboard set off a heated debate on social media sites like Twitter.
