The preseason game between the Houston Texans and the Dallas Cowboys scheduled for Thursday has been canceled to allow Texans players to go home to their families after Hurricane Harvey caused widespread flooding in the area.

The teams had planned to donate ticket proceeds from the more than 40,000 tickets sold to the hurricane relief fund, ESPN reported. Refunds will be given if requested, but purchasers can choose to donate the $25-per-ticket cost to the relief fund instead.

Preseason NFL games are just for practice and don't count toward the season standings.

Team owners the McNair family have said they would donate an amount equal to the money they would have generated from ticket sales, but wanted players to be able to get home and be with their families as well as help with relief efforts, ESPN reported.

The decision to cancel the game was made Wednesday morning after the game had been moved from Houston to Arlington, Texas, where the Cowboys play at AT&T Stadium.

Texans players will drive back to Houston on Wednesday, NFL.com reported. The team had been practicing at the Cowboys’ facility in Frisco, Texas, after playing the New Orleans Saints on Saturday.

The Texans thanked the Cowboys and the NFL for their help and support during the hurricane.

Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee said his team supported the cancellation and was happy the Texans got to go home. Lee also said some of the Cowboys players planned to do something to help with relief efforts.

Texans pass rusher J.J. Watt has raised more than $5 million and several NFL coaches have donated $1 million each to relief efforts, including Robert Kraft of the Patriots, Amy Adams Strunk of the Titans, and the Jets, as well as the NFL Foundation, NFL.com reported.

Twitter followers generally supported the move, given the circumstances, and wished the Texans well.
