Terrorist Marwan Killed in January Philippines Raid, DNA Confirms

One of the FBI’s most-wanted terrorists, known as Marwan, was killed in the Philippine terrorist raid in January, a DNA test has confirmed.

Zulkifli bin Hir, known commonly as Marwan, was a Malaysian bomb maker and he was suspected of being a member of the terror group Jemaah Islamiyah in southeast Asia.

"After a thorough review of forensic data and information obtained from our Philippine law enforcement partners, the FBI has assessed that terrorism subject Zulkifli Abdhir ... is deceased and has been removed from the FBI's list of Most Wanted Terrorists," David Bowdich, assistant director in charge of the FBI's Los Angeles field office, told CNN.

Marwan was indicted in California in 2007 on terror charges, including supplying IEDs to terrorists and training terrorists in bomb making.

The January raid in the Philippines has been widely criticized because 44 of the country’s police commandos were killed in the clash with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels.

Although the rebel group had a peace agreement with the government, the group said after the raid that police failed to “liaise with them about the operation as required under the deal, leading to the accidental clash,” the BBC reported. The group being targeted by the raid was the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, a Moro Islamic Liberation Front splinter group that did not have a peace agreement.

The DNA confirmation of Marwan’s death was apparently made from a severed finger recovered after the raid, CNN said.

In early March, the Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict released a report that said Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters was allegiant to ISIS. The report was also critical of Philippine authorities, saying a “single-minded focus” with the goal of killing Marwan ended up destroying the peace agreement with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
