'Terminator' Reboot: Will Arnold Schwarzenegger 'Be Back' For New Trilogy?

"The Terminator" film franchise is being rebooted, with a new trilogy slated to hit theaters in the summer of 2015, but it is not clear whether Arnold Schwarzenegger is the star again.

Paramount Pictures announced the news of the new trilogy on Thursday. Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier have been tasked with writing the trilogy's screenplay. The first film is set to be released on June 26, 2015, and no directors or actors have been cast yet, TheWrap.com reported.

The original "Terminator" came out in the 1980s and 1990s, and James Cameron directed it. Schwarzenegger will always be remembered for his lead role as a cyborg in the original trilogy.

Producers have reportedly pursued Schwarzenegger for the new films, but the former California governor has remained tight-lipped about whether he will sign on.

"I'm very happy that the studios want me to be in Terminator 5 and to star as the Terminator," he said, according to fan website TheArnoldFans.com.

Paramount Pictures is partnering up with film producers David Ellison of Skydance Pictures and his sister Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures to produce the stand-alone trilogy, and all films will reportedly hit theatres before 2019.

The Ellison siblings are children of billionaire Larry Ellison, who is CEO of Oracle Corporation. The two helped produce "Zero Dark Thirty," "World War Z," and "Star Trek Into Darkness."

Grossing more than $1.4 billion in the box office alone, "The Terminator" franchise showcases a life and death struggle between a network of artificially intelligent machines and human resistance forces led by the protagonist John Connor, who must save mankind.

Though plot details have yet to be released, FirstShowing.net reported the new "Terminator" trilogy "won't have anything to do with John Connor or any of the mythology created in the previous films."

"The Avengers 2," Pixar's "Inside Out," and Fox and Ubisoft's adaptation of video game, "Assassin's Creed" will be released within weeks of the new "Terminator."
