Two teens collected donations worth more than $4,000 for the Montgomery County Women's Center in Texas, The Houston Chronicle reported.

The iSchool High sophomores, 15-year-old Courtney Brumley and 16-year-old Avery Palacios, launched their charity drive last month ahead of a Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competition, which they will participate in.

Both students wanted to focus their attention to domestic violence and embarked upon a campaign to collect donations for the Montgomery County Women's Center, which strives to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault within the community.

According to its website, the center receives over 2,000 hotline calls a month and fills 75 beds almost every night.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence noted that 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the U.S., with one in four women being victims of physical violence by an intimate partner in their life time.

In light of these sobering statistics, donations at the Montgomery County Women's Center are always needed so Brumley and Palacios partnered up with the HOSA competition for the project.

"We had to pick a topic that was important to us and that was safety or health related," Palacios said per The Houston Chronicle. "We heard about the women's center and we were really drawn to it. It's a cause that we think is really important and isn't really talked about in the community and so we decided to do a donation drive."

The pair set up the collection drive on Dec. 1, at their school and surrounding neighborhoods and after just two weeks they had to stop because of all the donations that had poured in.

Palacios said that they did not expect to receive such support.

"We wanted to make a difference but we didn't think that we could do that much, so it made it much more exciting when we were able to do so much," she said, according to The Houston Chronicle.

Brumley described how they were able to fill up the center's donation room "and then we had stuff in the hallway, too."
