A convicted teen killer who murdered three people in Pennsylvania in 2007 reportedly hung himself in prison Friday.

Alec Kreider was 16 when his high school friend Kevin Haines and his parents, Tom and Lisa Haines, of Manheim Township, were stabbed to death, Lancaster Online reported. Tim Kreider, Alec Kreider's father, reportedly turned his son in to authorities after he admitted the killings.

Kreider, 25, was serving three life sentences at the SCI Camp Hill when he was found unconscious in his cell Friday, Lancaster Online reported. After undergoing "life-saving procedures," Kreider was pronounced dead at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania at 4:31 p.m. Friday, according to a statement from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

The Cumberland County Coroner's office told Lancaster Online that Kreider hung himself.

"Whereas we are thinking about Mr. Kreider's family, who did nothing wrong and did all they could, we hope the focus remains where it should in this case – with the three innocent individuals who were savagely murdered in their own home, and those left behind to struggle with such a horrifying tragedy," Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman said in a prepared statement, according to Lancaster Online.

WHTM-TV reported that authorities said they believed Kreider's original plan in 2007 was to smother Kevin Haines, a close friend and classmate, but ended up fatally stabbing him and his parents in their bedrooms.

The Haines' 20-year-old daughter woke up during the attacks and escaped the home unharmed, the television station reported. WHTM-TV said Kreider never provided a motive for the murders.

Kreider's life sentences were scheduled to be e re-evaluated following a 2012 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down automatic life terms with no chance of parole for teenage killers, the television station reported.
