The Texas town of Longview has paid Ted Nugent $16,250 not to perform at an upcoming Fourth of July celebration.

The settlement to end contract negotiations with the 65-year-old rocker stemmed from a prior verbal agreement the town had made with Nugent, which subsequently broke down over concerns that his past controversial statements and song lyrics would be inappropriate for a family audience, the Longview News Journal reported.

In January, Nugent, while speaking at a hunting and outdoor trade show in Las Vegas referred to the "communist-educated" President Barack Obama as a "subhuman mongrel," while also declaring that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has "spare scrotums."

Nugent subsequently apologized for the Obama insult, telling conservative radio host Ben Ferguson, "I did cross the line. I do apologize, not necessarily to the president, but on behalf of much better men than myself, like the best governor in America, Gov. Rick Perry, (and Abbott) the best attorney general in America," the Houston Chronicle reported.

"(There were) a variety of reasons. Cost, structure, is it the right musical act for this type of event — a city-sponsored, family-oriented overall event," city spokesman Shawn Hara told the Longview News Journal about the cancellation. "They decided no, we don’t want to move forward, it is not the right act for this. At that point we decided to end discussions."

"[Nugent's performance] didn’t really fit what we trying to put together, a family oriented program ... and I confirmed with his thoughts that that probably wasn’t the right act," Mayor Jay Dean added. "And I still feel that it was the right decision. It just didn’t fit with what we were trying to put together."

The $16,250 payoff the town agreed to pay Nugent for not performing was reportedly half the sum the rocker would have received if he had performed.

The decision to pay the controversial conservative activist not to perform did not sit well with some local GOP leaders, including outgoing Chairman of the Gregg County Republican Party Keith Rothra.

"We have paid $16,000 to Ted Nugent for political correctness," Rothra told the Longview News Journal. "It’s directly related to the state-level stuff."

Rothra was referring to the rocker's involvement in the campaign for GOP gubernatorial nominee Greg Abbott.
