Ted Cruz waged a Twitter battle with the chair of Harvard University’s American-studies program over the origin of the United States and made sure to get in the last word, er, tweet.
According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Republican senator from Texas tweeted a fiery response to a tweet on Thursday by Joyce Chaplin who said the United States — created by the international community through the Peace of Paris, in 1783 — was betraying the very same community by backing out of the Paris climate agreement.
The 1783 treaty between the United States and Britain as well as treaties signed between Britain and France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic were responsible for ending the American Revolutionary War, noted the Chronicle. Known collectively as the Peace of Paris, the treaties in part delineated the territories owned by each nation.
Chaplin responded, saying that international recognition was needed to achieve national statehood, and the senator fired back, calling the professor one of his alma mater’s “lefty academics.”
