Lauren Miranda, a middle school math teacher in New York, says she was fired after a student found her topless photo.
Miranda had been teaching at New York’s Bellport Middle School. The photo was taken in 2016 and sent by cellphone to another teacher in the South Country School District, whom Miranda was dating at the time, according to The Washington Post. Miranda said she never posted the photo anywhere and is uncertain how the student obtained it.
Now, Miranda is claiming gender discrimination and intends to sue the school district for $3 million over her dismissal.
Miranda, 25, was fired by the school district in a closed door meeting. District officials declined to comment on the case.
“I am a teacher who is being penalized for being a woman,” Miranda is quoted by Newsday. “My future has been condemned because I am a female, with female breasts, seen in a mild selfie.”
Her attorney John Ray added, “We are in the millennial and Z Generation, and things have long changed since the days of Playboy magazine ... Today, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the display of a woman’s chest.”
But Miranda said she has no regrets about taking the photograph.
“Everything I have worked so hard for since I was 18-years-old has been stolen from me because of one innocuous selfie ... My upper torso is no more offensive than a man’s.
“I loved my job. I really thought this was where I was going to spend the next 30 years of my life.”
