A teacher fired a gun accidentally during a gun safety class in California on Tuesday injuring one student, KSBW-TV reported.

The incident happened at the high school in Seaside, California, where teacher Dennis Alexander was in the middle of his gun safety course for his Administration of Justice class, authorities told the television station.

The teacher had the gun pointed at the ceiling when it fired, with pieces of the ceiling falling to the ground about 1:20 p.m., authorities said, per KSBW-TV.

A 17-year-old boy had to be hospitalized when fragments from the bullet ricocheted off the ceiling and lodged into his neck, his father Fermin Gonzales, told the television station.

"He's shaken up, but he's going to be OK," Gonzales told KSBW-TV. "I'm just pretty upset that no one told us anything and we had to call the police ourselves to report it.

"It's the craziest thing," Gonzales continued, adding that the teacher was able to use the gun for a demonstration on how to disarm someone when the incident happened. "It could have been very bad."

Marci McFadden, chief of communication and engagement with the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, told The Californian newspaper that Alexander has been put on administrative leave during an investigation into the shooting.

The Californian reported that Alexander also serves as a reserve police officer for the Sand City police and is a Seaside city councilman.

The Monterey school district has a policy that prohibits anyone besides school resource officers from carrying guns and other weapons on campus, McFadden told the publication. Police and school administrators say they are investigating whether Alexander was legally allowed to have a gun on campus that day, The Californian wrote.

"I have concerns about why he was displaying a loaded firearm in a classroom," Sand City Police Chief Brian Ferrante told KSBW-TV. "We will be looking into that."

Ferrante told the television station that Alexander has been a reserve Sand City police officer for the past 11 years, and described his track record as "positive and professional." The station said that Alexander was named the department's reserve officer of the year in 2013.

The incident comes at a time when there is a nationwide debate on whether teachers should be armed in school in light of the shooting spree at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 were killed and more than a dozen injured by gunfire.

A provision in a new Florida law passed last week in response to the Stoneman Douglas shooting will allow trained teachers and school workers to carry handguns on campus, according to NBC News.
