Tanisha Anderson: Death of Woman in Police Custody Ruled Homicide

By    |   Friday, 02 Jan 2015 04:28 PM

The death of Tanisha Anderson, a mentally ill woman who was in the custody of the Cleveland Police Department, has been ruled a homicide, and on Friday the family asked for justice for their daughter.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Anderson’s death Nov. 13 was caused by being physically restrained in a prone position, and her ischemic heart disease and bipolar disorder were factors in the death.

In a statement to NewsNet 5, Anderson's family said, “Our beloved Tanisha’s death has been ruled a homicide. The family demands justice for Tanisha, a thorough criminal investigation, and an independent prosecutor that results in accountability by the police officers and the Cleveland Police Department.”

Police picked up Anderson, 37, after her family called and said she was disturbing the peace, the Cleveland.com reported. She was being taken to a nearby medical center for a mental health evaluation.

“Police said Anderson began to kick at the officers as they escorted her to a police car, and went limp during the struggle,” Cleveland.com wrote. But the family told the news site that Anderson got nervous in the back of the police car and got out. When she did so, a police officer brought her to the ground and put a knee in her back while he handcuffed her.

The incident is being investigated by the police department’s Use of Deadly Force Investigation Team. The family has been active in asking that all police officers receive 40 hours of training that will help them deal with mentally ill people.

In a statement Friday, the Cleveland Police Department said the team is continuing its investigation and “no new information regarding the investigation is available at this time. Both of the officers involved in the incident remain assigned to the Division of Police in a restricted duty capacity. Upon completion of the Use of Deadly Force Investigation Team’s investigation, the case will be presented to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office for review.”
