Taco Bell wants customers to preorder its newest menu item, but with one big catch: The fast-food chain won't tell you what it is.
The Mexican chain has been pumping the
mystery item for weeks, according to GrubStreet.com. The product, whatever it is, will be introduced during the Super Bowl on Sunday and available in stores the following day. But the lucky customers who preorder will get a taste on Saturday.
Ads have included NBA star James Harden and "alien expert" Giorgio Tsoukalos, both posing with a green mystery box, GrubStreet.com reported.
According to the Taco Bell website, customers are limited to preordering just five of the mystery menu item at $2.99 apiece.
"Trust us? Then pre-order it now sight unseen, and you'll get to taste it on Saturday, Feb. 6," stated the website. "That's two days before the rest of the world."
Taco Bell also tried to spread the word on Twitter.
The website Consumerist.com is betting that the mystery item is Quesalupa, which has been tested at Taco Bell locations in Toledo, Ohio.
"As we know, the Quesalupa was first spotted in the wild in Toledo, where early reviews of the Quesalupa were fine but nothing to brag about — one reader told us that it tastes like a Chalupa, 'but a lot more cheesy,'" the site reported.
Talk show host Conan O'Brien already
nicknamed the snack "case of lupus" last year.
The gimmick surrounding Taco Bell's mystery item has been met with wide range of comments on social media.
