Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, has written a letter to the family of Michael Brown after the unarmed teen was shot and killed by a police officer.

Brown, 18, was shot by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, 28, on Aug. 9 while walking down a street in the St. Louis suburb, touching off days of protests and riots.

Fulton began her letter to the Brown family, written exclusively for Time magazine, by saying she wished she had “an automatic word of comfort” during this time, but that she doesn’t.

“I hate that you and your family must join this exclusive yet growing group of parents and relatives who have lost loved ones to senseless gun violence,” Fulton, of Miami, Florida, continued. “Of particular concern is that so many of these gun violence cases involve children far too young. But Michael is much more than a police/gun violence case; Michael is your son. A son that barely had a chance to live. Our children are our future so whenever any of our children — black, white, brown, yellow, or red — are taken from us unnecessarily, it causes a never-ending pain that is unlike anything I could have imagined experiencing.”

Fulton told the Brown family they would garner a wide number of supporters but that their circle of those they trust will shrink.

“Your circle will necessarily close tighter because the trust you once, if ever, you had in ‘the system’ and their agents are forever changed. Your lives are forever changed,” she wrote.

Wilson, who was identified by police last week as the shooter, is on administrative leave with pay.

George Zimmerman, who shot Trayvon Martin, 17, was acquitted in July of last year of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges after shooting the teenager in a Sanford, Florida, neighborhood in February of 2012.

The case involving Brown’s shooting is expected to be heard by the St. Louis County Circuit Court grand jury on Wednesday.

"We are going to attempt to start giving evidence to the grand jury (Wednesday), depending upon the ability to get the witnesses in and the witnesses showing up," said Ed Magee, spokesman for St. Louis County’s prosecutor Robert McCulloch, St. Louis Today reported. "It will be handled by the attorney regularly assigned to the grand jury. It will not be by Mr. McCulloch."
