An 82-mile swim across Lake Powell may be a record for an unassisted marathon swim for 34-year-old Sarah Thomas of Conifer, Colorado.

Thomas told The Associated Press her biggest worry during the 56-hour swim on the border of Utah and Arizona was staying awake, which she accomplished by consuming liquid carbohydrate and electrolyte mixtures every 30 minutes.

A team of 13 people followed Thomas by house boat and gave her the mixtures via water bottle tied to a cord, allowing the athlete to stay swimming in the water the entire time, the AP said.

Two independent observers, who are well-known marathon swimmers, watched Thomas' swim and will help the Marathon Swimmers Federation verify it as a record. A 16-member panel from around the world will review logs, GPS tracking data, photos, and video to confirm the record.

"They have the knowledge and the credibility. It's not just Sarah asking her brother to come out and say 'Oh yeah, my sister did this,'" Federation co-founder Evan Morrison told the AP.

The current record is held by Chloe McCardel of Australia, who swam 77.3 miles in the ocean in the Bahamas in a little over 41 hours in October 2014.

Open Water Swimming tracked Thomas's swim online, calling her "beyond incredible."

Before setting out on her marathon swim, Thomas posted on Facebook about her plans, detailing the months of preparation and noting that the feat "will take a combo of sheer will/stubbornness and a lot of luck to pull off."

"Even getting to the starting point has been a major journey," Thomas wrote. "I've had so much support from so many people in so many areas all summer that I couldn't even begin to list everyone. A solo swim is never just a solo swim."
