King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden threw a party to celebrate his 40 years on the throne and invited “everybody” to the palace courtyard to dance.
While more ceremonial events took place earlier in the weekend – a church service attended by royalty from nearby countries, dinner, and a concert – Sunday’s dance party brought out crowds to celebrate with the 67-year-old king.

King Gustaf invited people to attend on a
Swedish radio program, AFP reported. “I invite everybody to a music and dance party in the inner courtyard of the royal palace,” the king said. “And everybody is welcome. Bring your dancing shoes. Cheers!”
The King and his wife, Queen Silvia, were the first to take the plastic floor that covered the courtyard cobblestones. The two have been married for 37 years.
During the radio interview, King Gustaf was asked how long he intended to remain as king.
“I can't answer that. It will be determined by my health gradually. But I think it's very exciting because there is so much happening in the world around us,” he said.
AFP said that a survey of Sweden’s citizens found that 60 percent were in support of the king’s daughter, Princess Victoria, becoming queen when her father steps down.
In an in-depth interview about his reign, published on the Swedish Royal Court’s website, the king told XXX about the challenges and successes. He talked about the motto that he adopted, “For Sweden – With the Times,” and following that motto.
“I have tried to live according to my motto by being sensitive to the currents in society, and to the demands, needs and expectations placed on a monarch with the times,” King Gustaf said. “For me, it's a matter of living in harmony with developments in Sweden and the whole of the ever-changing world that we are a part of."
Some took to social media to express congratulations to King Gustaf for his 40-year reign.
