Suzy Favor Hamilton, a three-time Olympic runner who had a secret life as a Las Vegas call girl that was exposed by a gossip website, says her memoir set for release Sept. 14 will address her fight with mental illness.
Favor Hamilton was one of America's best middle distance runners and was so good at the University of Wisconsin – 23 Big Ten titles in four years – that the conference named its female athlete of year trophy after her,
noted the Capital Times.
The conference removed her name from the trophy when the website The Smoking Gun revealed that Favor Hamilton had a double-life as a high-priced Las Vegas escort in 2012, despite being married with a child at home.
The athlete blamed manic depression and bipolar disorder for her misadventures and the book, "Fast Girl: A Life Spent Running From Madness," will talk about her struggle with both since childhood,
according to publisher HarperCollins.
Favor Hamilton shared the news about the book's release on Twitter Wednesday.
"Finally, with the help of her devoted husband, Suzy finally got the proper medical help she needed," said a HarperCollins statement. "In this startling frank memoir, she recounts the journey to outrun her demons, revealing how a woman used to physically controlling her body learned to come to terms with her unstable mind."
Favor Hamilton was a seven-time USA champion and competed in the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics,
according to BringBackTheMile.com. She is tied for winning the most individual titles in NCAA history, which became overshadowed by her stint as a prostitute named Kelly Lundy, noted HarperCollins.
"Today, thanks to diagnosis and therapy, Kelly has stepped into the shadows, but Suzy is building a better life, one day at a time," said HarperCollins. "Sharing her story, Suzy is determined to raise awareness, provide understanding, and offer inspiration to others coping with their own challenges."
