Sustainable Legos will hit toy store shelves this year, with sugarcane being used to make plant-based plastic for Lego plants like leaves, bushes, and trees.

Polyethylene plastic made from sugarcane will make up 1 to 2 percent of all Legos produced and will be indistinguishable from the current plastic, the Danish company assured the public in a statement.

“Children and parents will not notice any difference in the quality or appearance of the new elements, because plant-based polyethylene has the same properties as conventional polyethylene,” Lego Group Vice President for Environmental Responsibility Tim Brooks said.

Production has started on the new sustainable pieces, and they will be sold in stores later this year. The polyethylene plastic is soft and flexible but also durable, the company said.

Legos are typically made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, an oil-based plastic. In 2015, the company established the Lego Sustainable Materials Center at a cost of $165 million to help reach its goal of zero waste by the year 2030.

As part of sustainability, Lego began in 2017 to use paper pulp trays for its Lego advent calendars rather than plastic trays in an effort to keep the plastic out of landfills.

Legos can be donated so that others can continue to use them, and they can also be recycled with other household plastics if they are worn out or damaged, according to the Lego website.

The company is a member of RE100, a group of big global companies that is working toward renewable power.
