Surfers Break Record: Guinness Milestone Smashed by 66 on Board at Once

By    |   Monday, 22 Jun 2015 11:18 AM

Sixty-six surfers broke the Guinness World Record for the most people riding on a surfboard at once after cramming onto a 42-foot-long custom-made board and surfing for 12 seconds Saturday in California.

Both surf champions and amateur enthusiasts mounted the 1,350-pound board to top the previous record set in Queensland, Australia, when 47 surfers balanced for 10 seconds on their 39-foot-long board in 2005, according to Time magazine.

Michael Empric, a Guinness World Record adjudicator, flew to Huntington Beach from New York specifically to judge the event and determine its success. It is also being determined whether the board itself will break the record for the largest surfboard in existence, according to Time.

Nev Hyman, who built the previous world-record-setting surfboard for the Australians, claims he has no grudges about possibly losing his record title, according to The Daily Mail.

“'It's all about fun. Surfing is fun . . . here we are just emulating surfing on a grand scale,” Hyman said. “Everyone known in professional surfing has made their mark in Huntington Beach.”

The 11-foot-wide, 16-inch-thick board was towed out from the beach by JetSkis, past the break line, out to catch a wave before the 66 surfers attempted the ride in front of more than 5,000 spectators, according to The Guardian. It is estimated that the weight of the board and surfers combined reached more than 10,000 pounds.

After its record-breaking debut, the surfboard is set to stay at Huntington Beach to take part in 4th of July celebrations and be displayed at the U.S. Open of Surfing before permanently finding its place at the International Surfing Museum, The Guardian noted.

“It’s almost like you’re bringing back Apollo 11,” said Visit Huntington Beach CEO Kelly Miller, according to The Guardian. “You’re bringing back the spacecraft and people get to see it . . . If I were to call it anything, I’d call it the new Statue of Stoke for SurfCityUSA.”
