The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously overturned an Alabama law that refused to recognize an out-of-state lesbian mother's adoption on Monday.

The ruling settled a long-running dispute between two women — listed as only "V.L" and "E.L." — whose relationship ended bitterly, The Associated Press reported.

The two never married, and while the women were together one of them bore three children. The other woman adopted those children in Georgia.

After splitting up, the birth mother sought to keep her former partner from seeing the children, however the Georgia courts gave the women joint custody.

After taking the case to Alabama, that state's Supreme Court sided with the birth mother, refusing to recognize the adoptive mother as a legal guardian as Georgia had.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Alabama had to honor the Georgia ruling.

"A state may not disregard the judgment of a sister state because it disagrees with the reasoning underlying the judgment or deems it to be wrong on the merits," the court wrote, according to USA Today. "Full faith and credit" must be given to the Georgia court's decision, it said further.

"The Supreme Court’s reversal of Alabama’s unprecedented decision to void an adoption from another state is a victory not only for our client but for thousands of adopted families," said Cathy Sakimura of the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

"No adoptive parent or child should have to face the uncertainty and loss of being separated years after their adoption just because another state’s court disagrees with the law that was applied in their adoption."

Across the U.S., roughly 30 states allow "second-parent adoptions" to gay and lesbian couples.
