Calif. Democrats Achieve Supermajority in Legislature

Democrats in California have achieved a two-thirds supermajority in the state legislature with the election victory of Democrat Sharon Quirk-Silva over Republican Assemblyman Chris Norby, according to the Los Angeles Times.

 

Thanks to Norby's concession Wednesday, Democrats now control both the Senate and Assembly chambers of the legislature, achieving a clear two-thirds majority in each.

 

The vote count between Norby and Quirk-Silva, a teacher and Fullerton city councilwoman, had remained close until Wednesday night. But that changed when the Orange County registrar of voters reported the Democrat's lead over the Republican incumbent had reached 3,348 votes, giving her 51.3 percent of the vote.

 

With only 6,906 ballots left to be counted, Norby conceded.
